Charcoal
glossary

The terms you will see on charcoal specifications, quotations and shipping documents.

Ash content
The non-combustible residue left after charcoal burns, as a percentage of weight. Lower ash means less residue on the bowl or grill. Usually reported on a dry basis.
Moisture (as received)
Water content of the charcoal as delivered. High moisture slows ignition and lowers usable heat.
Fixed carbon
The solid carbon that remains after volatile matter is driven off. A higher share generally means longer, steadier heat.
Volatile matter
Gases released when charcoal is heated. Lower volatile matter typically means less smoke and odour during use.
Gross calorific value (GCV)
The total heat released by complete combustion, expressed in kcal/kg. Also called higher heating value.
Dry basis
A result calculated as if the sample contained no moisture, so different samples can be compared fairly.
Briquette
Charcoal powder mixed with a binder and pressed into a uniform shape such as a cube, pillow or hexagon.
Binder
The material that holds charcoal powder together in a briquette. The binder used is declared in the product brief.
Hollow hexagon
A six-sided briquette with a hole through the centre that improves airflow and ignition, common for barbecue.
Inner pack and master carton
The retail pack (for example 1 kg) and the outer shipping carton that holds several inner packs (for example 10 kg).
Private label
Product made by Aero Charcoal and packed under the buyer’s own brand and artwork.
Reference sample
The approved sample that defines the agreed specification for production.
HS code 4402
The Harmonized System heading for wood charcoal, including shell or nut charcoal, whether or not agglomerated. The subheading used for coconut shell charcoal briquettes (for example 4402.20 or 4402.90) can differ by country, so confirm it with your customs broker.
UN 1361, Class 4.2
The dangerous-goods entry for charcoal (substances liable to spontaneous combustion). Whether it applies depends on the product and test results.
