Short answer: A shisha charcoal specification comes down to five numbers: ash, moisture, fixed carbon, volatile matter and gross calorific value. For premium coconut cubes, ash matters most, ideally below about 2% on a dry basis.
Buyers comparing coconut shisha charcoal from different factories usually receive a spec sheet with the same handful of parameters. Knowing what each one measures, and on which basis it is reported, is what makes offers from different suppliers comparable.
The five core parameters
| Parameter | What it measures | Why it matters for shisha |
|---|---|---|
| Ash (dry basis) | Non-combustible residue left after burning | Less ash on the bowl and foil, cleaner session |
| Moisture (as received) | Water in the charcoal as delivered | High moisture slows ignition and can cause cracking |
| Fixed carbon (dry basis) | Solid carbon remaining after volatiles are released | Indicates how long and steady the heat is |
| Volatile matter (dry basis) | Gases released on heating | Lower values usually mean less smoke and odour |
| Gross calorific value (dry basis) | Total heat released, in kcal/kg | Overall heat potential of the cube |
Check the basis before comparing
Two suppliers can both write “ash 2%” and mean different things. Dry basis removes moisture from the calculation; as received includes it. Ash, fixed carbon, volatile matter and calorific value are normally quoted on a dry basis, moisture on an as-received basis. Always compare like with like.
Targets versus test results
A published specification can be either a target (what the product is designed to meet) or a test result for a particular batch. Aero Charcoal checks every batch against the agreed parameters.
How Aero Charcoal’s shisha grades compare
| Shisha Signature | Shisha Select | |
|---|---|---|
| Ash, dry basis | Max. 1.8% | Max. 2.5% |
| Moisture, as received | Max. 5.0% | Max. 6.0% |
| Fixed carbon, dry basis | Min. 82% | Min. 80% |
| Volatile matter, dry basis | Max. 16% | Max. 17% |
| Gross calorific value, dry basis | ≥ 7,400 kcal/kg | ≥ 7,200 kcal/kg |
| Cube formats | 25 mm / 26 mm | 25 mm / 26 mm |
Shisha Signature is positioned for premium brands that compete on low ash. Shisha Select is the core commercial grade for distributors who need consistent quality at a competitive cost.
Beyond the lab sheet
Lab numbers do not tell the whole story. Ask for an application test as well: ignition time, how the cube holds its shape, ash colour and how it behaves through a full session. That is why our quality workflow combines laboratory checks with application testing before a batch is released.
