Shisha charcoal packaging: inner packs and master cartons

By Aero Charcoal · Last updated

Short answer: Shisha charcoal is usually packed in inner packs of 500 g or 1 kg, which go into a master carton for shipping. Settle the inner size, the carton weight, the labelling and who supplies the artwork before production starts.

Packaging decides how your product looks on a shelf and how it arrives after weeks at sea. Three layers matter.

The three layers

  1. Inner pack. The pack the customer sees: a retail box, a carton sleeve or a bag. Common sizes are 500 g and 1 kg.
  2. Master carton. The outer shipping carton holding several inner packs, for example 10 kg in total.
  3. Pallet or container load. How the master cartons are stacked and secured for transport.

Each layer has its own requirements. A beautiful inner box in a weak master carton arrives crushed.

What to decide for the inner pack

  • Pack size and the number of cubes inside. Cube size changes the count, so confirm both.
  • Material and finish. Printed carton, sleeve or bag, matt or gloss, window or no window.
  • Moisture protection. Charcoal should stay dry. Ask what lining or wrap is used.
  • Closing and tamper protection. Seals, tape or shrink wrap.

What to decide for the master carton

  • Total weight per carton. Heavy cartons are harder to handle and can burst.
  • Strength. Ask about the board grade and how many layers can be stacked.
  • Marking. Product name, batch or production date, net weight and any required shipping marks.

Labels and languages

Check what your destination requires on the pack. Typical items are the product name, net weight, brand owner or importer details and country of origin. If you sell in several markets, decide early which languages go on the pack. Changing artwork after approval costs time.

Artwork and approval

For private label, agree these steps in writing:

  1. You send artwork, or the supplier adapts your brand guidelines.
  2. The supplier shares the dieline, which shows where each panel and fold falls.
  3. You approve a proof of the artwork, materials and dimensions.
  4. Production follows the approved proof.

Read our checklist what to prepare for private label before you brief the supplier.

Shipping rules

Charcoal can fall under dangerous-goods rules for sea freight, depending on the product and test results. Packaging and marking are part of what the carrier checks. See shipping charcoal by sea.
